Argos, the historical city

It is the oldest city in Greece and now the second largest city in the Peloponnese, modern, multifaceted and dynamic. Ideal for visiting all year, it is best to arrive in summer to enjoy cultural events and outdoor activities.
Located in the center of the largest archaeological park in the world, including Mycenae, Tiryns, Nafplio and Lerna, all about 10 km away, which makes it an excellent starting point to visit these fantastic places. Of course the city has its own charms, with the warmth of its people, its small but modern hotels, cuisine and nightlife.
There is plenty to see and do in Argos, like visiting archaeological treasures and enjoy their cultural life throughout the year as the Festival brings together renowned artists Argos and novels to show the entire region’s cultural production.
The city organizes several tours as the way of the Prophet Elias, which begins in the market, including historic buildings like the house-museum of Kalergis, leader of the Greek independence, which is part of Argos Archaeological Museum, the Castle, Monastery of Panagia, the ancient temple dedicated to Hera and love spiral paths for cyclists. Another circuit is Akova – Kefalari quite exitente, which leads to the Source of Akova with trees and benches to reach the plains and breathtaking Gulf of Argolis.
A must visit is the Palacio de Konstantopoulos, one of the finest neoclassical buildings in the city, now houses a cultural center. It was built in 1912, designed by German architect Sziller, and its interior is decorated with works by major Italian artists. It was the residence of the famous actress Katina Paxinou, the daughter of Vasilios Konstantopoulos.
Other parts of the city are the Plaza Central, with its Cathedral built on the ruins of the church of San Pedro, the Museum, the largest mall in the Argolid and the popular market, one of the largest in Greece, operates Wednesdays and Saturdays, and is an experience worth living to learn the true essence of Argos.
It is very easy to get to Argos Corinth-Tripoli highway, as it is located 115 km from Piraeus and 159 km from Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. There is bus service from Argolis and Athens, which is also connected by rail.
