Athens, Greece Survival Guide
The hearth of western civilization, you will want to make your visit to Athens enjoyable. Be prepared to walk. Enjoy the museums and local markets, and visit the plaka. The Euro is the currency used in Greece. Banks and ATM machines can be found on almost every major street in Athens.
Transportation
1. Arriving at the Athens International Airport approximately 17 miles northeast of Athens, you can take public transportation to one of central Athens’ two terminals.
If you plan on driving, you will need an international license, but you can travel by bus throughout the city.
Tickets can be purchased at kiosks or ticket booths near the main stops. Within the city, there is also a metro system that will quickly take you to various destinations within Athens. Walking, however, will give you the opportunity to see the different aspects of the city.
Food
2. Although breakfast and lunch are not considered main meals, to enjoy the full flavor of Athens, order a coffee or wine, such as retsina, at one of the establishments in the plaka, and enjoy the atmosphere.
In Athens you will find that the main meal is dinner, which is often served after 9 p.m. Try one of the local tavernas and order one of the local dishes, such as moussaka, tzatziki or fried meatballs.
Accommodations
3. Athens offers numerous hotels, but you want to locate a hotel close to the plaka so that you can be within walking distance of the Acropolis and have easy access to transportation. During high season, which runs from Easter to October, rooms may be difficult to find. Arrange for your stay before you leave.
