Crete

Crete (Kriti Greek) with 8,261 km ² is the largest island in the Aegean Sea and the fifth of the Mediterranean. It is shaped and measures 265 kilometers long from east to west and between 10 and 56 kilometers wide. It is one of the thirteen regions or peripheries of Greece. Its capital is Heraklion.

The island is divided administratively into four provinces or prefectures, Khania (or Chania), Rethymno, Heraklion (or Heraklion) and Lasithi.
There are two international airports, one in Khania and the other in connection with Athens Heraklion, Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes and Thessaloniki. On the north coast are several major ports. There are U.S. naval bases in Heraklion and in Suda Bay.

Crete since 3000 to 1200 a. C. was the center of a thriving civilization known as Minoan or Aegean civilization, contemporary Egypt and Mesopotamia, which disappeared probably due to the eruption of Santorini volcano.

Its special geographical location and its continuous crossing of cultures has given its history, myths and traditions. Golden sandy beaches and crystalline waters have resulted in Crete has developed, mainly in the north of the island, a tourist industry that caters each year to two million visitors
