Greek Holidays
Anyone wanting to head to a sun-kissed beach or for a cultural break in the Mediterranean can find everything they are looking for in Greece.
Nestled beneath Albania and Macedonia, the Greek mainland is flanked by around 6000 islands, 227 of which are inhabited. The peak tourist season in Greece tends to last from May to September, which makes it a popular destination for Brits seeking a summer break.
Athens
Greece’s bustling capital city is renowned for its historical sites with the ancient Acropolis and its museum among the most visited attractions.
Named after the goddess Athena, Athens is one of the oldest cities in Europe and is known as the birthplace of democracy.
It is the perfect place to enjoy a meal in an outdoor cafe while soaking up the atmosphere or to take a stroll along the promenade which links the main archaeological sites.
Corfu
Corfu is one of the more cosmopolitan Greek islands and is popular with tourists. It is set in the Ionian Sea and boasts Venetian style architecture and picturesque villages.
The largest town on the island, Corfu Town, is noted for its lively nightlife. The island is also known as Kerkyra by the locals and is home to two fortresses which helped to protect it from pirates in medieval times.Skiathos
The island of Skiathos may be small, but it still has more than a hundred beaches to visit. A bus service runs across the island and visits each of the main beaches. Set in the Sporades islands, Skiathos is covered in a pine forest and surrounded by crystal-clear sea.
It is very popular during July and August and can become busy during this period. Koukounaries beach is the largest on the island and is popular for water sports, while Lalaria beach is surrounded by beautiful sea caves and rock formations.
Zante
Also called Zakynthos, Zante is well known for being the nesting place of the endangered Caretta-Caretta turtle, which lays eggs in the sand during the mating season.
Part of the Ionian island group, Zante is prized for its beautiful beaches with the most visited being Navagio or Shipwreck Beach. Navagio is only accessible by boat and as its name suggests, there’s a ship wrecked boat in the middle of it. Agios Nikolaos beach is on the north coast of the island and is the place to go for water sports.
Rhodes
Part of the Dodecanese island group beneath Turkey, Rhodes is one of Greece’s most visited islands because of its Byzantine churches, its colossus and its walled capital city. The Medieval city, called Rhodes Town, is set within a Venetian castle.
The island’s second biggest city is Lindos, which is built upon a large rock with a castle on top. The resort of Faliraki is also on the island and is home to Rhodes’ most popular beach and nightlife.
