Kastoria’s origins date back to antiquity, the old identificadose Celetrum city, the Romans captured it in 200 BC C. The Byzantine historian Procopius records that the city was later renamed Justinianopolis. Kastoria is an important religious center for the Greek Orthodox Church and is the seat of a metropolitan bishop. It originally had 72 Byzantine and medieval churches, of which 54 remain today.
