Kastoria: History, Religion and Football

Kastoria’s origins date back to antiquity, the old identificadose Celetrum city, the Romans captured it in 200 BC C. The Byzantine historian Procopius records that the city was later renamed Justinianopolis. Around 1385, the Ottoman Empire conquered the city. During the First Balkan War (1912), Greece took Kastoria. The treaties of London and Bucharest in 1913 confirmed to Kastoria as a city belonging to Greek territory.
During the Second World War and Greek Civil War, the city was badly bombed and suffered immense damage. He was captured almost ELAS communist movement in 1948, and the final battles of the civil war occurred in the nearby Mount Grammos.
Kastoria is an important religious center for the Greek Orthodox Church and is the seat of a metropolitan bishop. It originally had 72 Byzantine and medieval churches, of which 54 remain today. Some of these have been restored and provides a vision of the Greek Orthodox style of architecture and fresco painting.
Kastoria FC is the football team in town. Founded in 1963, when three smaller teams decided to join forces to achieve a truly competitive club. Its most successful season was in 1974 when he managed to ascend to the Greek First Division and in 1980 when they won the Cup surprise Greece.
