The Cyclades

The Greek Cyclades Islands are an archipelago located in the center of the Aegean. Administratively a province or prefecture in the southern Aegean region. Comprise about two hundred twenty islands, the main (ordered from largest to smallest): Naxos, Andros, Paros, Tinos, Milos, Kea, Amorgos, Ios, Kythnos, Mykonos (Mykonos), Syros, Santorini (Thera or Thira) , Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Anafi and two hundred other smaller islands, among which the island of Delos.

The name of the Cyclades derives from the Greek word ?????? (circle) to which reference is made to the peculiar distribution of the archipelago, which seems to spread like a circle around the sacred island of Delos.

Mykonos and Santorini have international airport. Naxos, Siros, Paros and Milos have airports for domestic flights. From the port of Piraeus (Athens) are boats (ferries) to the Cyclades. Among all the islands there are also regular ferry services.

The typical architecture of the Cyclades, including Mykonos and Santorini, with whitewashed houses and doors and windows painted in bright colors (predominantly blue), are one of the biggest attractions for tourists.

The terrain is mountainous island. The climate is dry, hot in summer and warm in winter. Storms sometimes block the way to the boats between the island with the rest of Greece.
