The Island of Syros

The island of Syros is an important commercial and cultural center of Greece. It combines an elegant character and numerous historical and archaeological monuments with beautiful nature that include beaches, landscapes and charming villages.
The architecture of the Syrians but shares the characteristics of the Cyclades architecture has its own peculiarities arising from the Venetian rule the island and the rest of the Cyclades during the Middle Ages. During the Venetian occupation the majority of the population converted to Catholicism as Syrians preserved, at present, a large percentage of Catholics compared to the rest of Greece, mostly Orthodox country.
During the war of independence of Greece, 1821, the island of Syros remained neutral under French protection, and welcomed a large number of Greek refugees who came from everywhere to escape the horrors of war. The vast majority of refugees did flourish the economy and culture of the island’s capital, Ermoúpolis and the island became the commercial and cultural center of Greece.

Ermoúpolis is also the capital of the island of Syros, the capital of the southern Aegean region, consisting of the provinces (nomes) of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese.
The heart of the city it is Miaulis Square, where the town hall, always full of people crowded cafes and terraces. The medieval town of Ano Syros Venice, located on the hill of San Jorge, is a maze of narrow streets and many stairways. At its highest point stands the Catholic church of San Jorge fortress, with the Archbishop’s Palace, the Capuchin Monastery and the Monastery of the Jesuits.
